Hurricane Irene Shuts Broadway Productions: Disney Shows Among Cancellations (Developing)

Hours after the Broadway League and the Off-Broadway League said that all Broadway shows are still cheduled to play this weekend, Disney announced that it has canceled this weekend's shows for Broadway's The Lion King and Mary Poppins.our editor recommendsHurricane Irene Bumps Up Ratings, Web Traffic for The Weather ChannelHurricane Irene: Broadway Shows Will Not Go DarkHurricane Irene: Networks Interrupt Programming for President Obama's AddressHurricane Irene: Hollywood Reacts "All performances of The Lion King at the Minskoff Theatre and Mary Poppins at the New Amsterdam Theatre Saturday, August 27th and Sunday, August 28th are cancelled due to Hurricane Irene," Disney's statement said. The decision was made for the "patrons' and staff's safety following the announcement of the impending suspension of MTA and Metro North service." Tickets for all three performances for the shows will be refunded. Also joining the list of weekend casualties is Lincoln Center Theater's War Horse, which won the 2011 Tony Award for best play. The Nederlander Organization also tweeted that all Broadway shows in its theaters would be canceled for Saturday and Sunday. That list includes Wicked, The Addams Family, Follies, Catch Me If You Can and Priscilla Queen of the Desert. It now seems safe to assume that most or all of the other shows playing on Broadway will cancel weekend performances due to safety concerns. The Broadway League, the official representative organization for Broadway, has released no update and its site continues to show that all performances are continuing as scheduled. But Playbill.com and other outlets are reporting that all Broadway theaters will go dark for the weekend, making this the biggest emergency shut-down since the 9/11 attacks in 2001. The Off-Broadway productions of Summer Shorts 5, Captain Ferguson's School for Balloon Warfare and Olive and the Bitter Herbs at the 59E59 Theaters have also been canceled for the weekend due to Irene. The special, one-night staged reading of Side Man by Warren Leight with Zachary Quinto and Melissa Leo, originally set to take place Sunday at 1 p.m., has also been nixed "in response to predicted hurricane conditions," the update on the Guild Hall website said. Entertainment companies said they will keep New York employees up-to-date on potential hurricane effects on offices over the weekend and on Monday. Time Warner, for example, will keep employees informed through its internal messaging systems, a spokesman said. David Rooney reports from New York. Robert Rodriguez Puts 'Blood In The Salsa' In This Week's Horror Bites

"Machete" director Robert Rodriguez wants you to see his "Spy Kids" movie the fourth installment in the series, which hit theaters last weekend. The director is going grindhouse again and cooking up some killer tacos to celebrate the occasion. Just watch this preview for "Blood in the Salsa" by clicking the photo below, and it will all make sense soon enough. There is guacamole, sour cream, and more of this week's horror news after the jump. Trailer for 'Hellraiser: Revelations' Burns Fans There's no kind way to say it: the trailer for the new "Hellraiser" movie sucks. In fact, it's so terrible that it makes some of the awful sequels to Clive Barker's 1987 film which is based off of his fantastic little novella, "The Hellbound Heart" look like Masterpiece Theatre. Barker took to Twitter to blast the trailer, announcing, "I want to put on record that the flick out there using the word "Hellraiser" is no f*ckin' child of mine! I have nothing to do with the f*ckin' thing. If they claim it's from the mind of Clive Barker, it's a lie. It's not even from my butthole." Alrighty then. The film was basically created so Dimension wouldn't lose their rights to the name, before "Drive Angry" director Patrick Lussier can deliver his reboot. Two questions: why wasn't Clive Barker this angry about some of the supremely ridiculous sequels that came before this, and what is up with Stephan Smith Collins' Pinhead? Yikes. [Empire] Rob Zombie Updates Fans on 'The Lords of Salem' "Casting for 'The Lords of Salem' is moving along quickly. Hopefully soon I will be able to announce some names," Rob Zombie recently teased to fans on his Facebook page. He also shared a new photo, which warns: "The Lords Are Coming," featuring a Viking skull in ominous black and white. "Lords" follows a DJ named Heidi a typical blonde Zombie character (who will possibly be played by his wife Sheri Moon Zombie). She receives a mysterious package in the mail with a record that plays backwards, induces strange flashbacks, and tickets inviting her to visit Salem, Massachusetts. She's expecting her hosts, The Lords of Salem, to be a band, but she's greeted with something diabolical instead. [Facebook] Fox Takes on Frankenstein The same guy who directed "Night at the Museum" and "Date Night" is directing "Frankenstein" for Fox. Shawn Levy will be working from Max Landis' script based on the classic Mary Shelley monster tale, that studios like Universal and Hammer Films helped make famous. Fox is already in talks to map out their creative plan so the film can be first amongst seven other Frank stories. Yes, you read that correctly. Can we get a big resounding, "Ugh?" [Deadline] Liv Tyler and John Carpenter Face "The Hell Within" "Halloween" writer/director, the big J.C., is executive producing a new horror movie and wants "The Strangers" actress Liv Tyler to be his star. Tyler would play a woman who braves the Brazilian jungle to save a girl's life, but once there discovers it was a trap to get her inside "The Hell Within". Short filmmaker Dennison Ramalho will be directing the project, which was written by Jeff Buhler of "The Midnight Meat Train" fame. [Bloody-Disgusting] 'The Faces' is Looking at 'Grace' Director Paul Solet From the producers who brought you "The Strangers" comes FilmNation Entertainment's "The Faces", and "Grace" director Paul Solet will be taking on the horror-thriller based on Eric Reese's screenplay. The film has a "Hostel-esque" spin, centering on two newlyweds who survive a brutal kidnapping. One year later, they find themselves facing a horrifying series of events, yet again. This time, the couple encounter "an elite underworld society which uses terror as a means of entertainment." Ridley March, 1991: Dear Diary, Note to self: Never request Depardieu if he is able to wait a couple of moments before while using toilet. No human should behave this way. Keck's Exclusives: Desperate Housewives' Felicity Huffman on Lynette's Transformation

Felicity Huffman, Desperate Housewives When last seen on Desperate Housewives, Lynette Scavo (Felicity Huffman) was in the midst of another horrible night, though this was really worse than most. She and estranged husband Tom (Doug Savant) were putting on a happy front at a neighborhood dinner party that culminated with the Wisteria Lane ladies hiding a dead body in a trunk.Felicity tells me that the September 25 season premiere will look a lot like the memorable 9 to 5 sequence when Jane Fonda, Lily Tomlin and Dolly Parton comically conspired to hide a corpse, as Lynette, Susan (Teri Hatcher), Bree (Marcia Cross) and Gaby (Eva Longoria) come together to cover up Carlos' murder of Gaby's sexually abusive stepfather."The whole first episode is about them being accomplices in this murder and actually burying this body," previews Felicity. "We had night shoots until three o'clock in the morning out at the Disney ranch with the fog moving in. It was heavy, horrifying and disturbing carrying this fake dead body wrapped up in a table cloth."While Felicity says the new season's mystery "adds a deep, dark element and shifts the ground upon which the women walk," it also provides Teri and Eva with some prime comedic bits. "And Eva by far got the dirtiest."For the first time in the series' run, Lynette will be a single woman, as Tom transitions to a new apartment and entertains the thought of romancing a woman from work. "What we're shooting now for Episode Two is the first week since he's moved off the Lane," says Felicity. "She's still dealing with the loss."The actress admits it has been challenging at times to play a shrew who never seems content. She's hoping this storyline will change the character before Housewives ends its run. "Lynette has been the kind of wife who has been chronically dissatisfied with her husband. She doesn't like Tom's job, she doesn't like that he doesn't have a job," she says. "She doesn't like that he started school, she doesn't like that he quit school. Doesn't like that he's not taking the job with Carlos and then when he does, she doesn't like that either. That has been hard for me as an actress to swallow because I know that's no way to be in a marriage." (Felicity has enjoyed a happy marriage to Shameless actor William H. Macy for fourteen years.)"What's great about this year," she says, "is that Tom rises up and says, 'No more.' I respect his decision, and I think it will finally force Lynette to truly change how she is in the world and in her marriage. Lynette has to be brought to the brink of losing Tom and her family before she changes."Now entering her eighth season as long-suffering Lynette, Felicity will take her place alongside such other iconic television women as Candice Bergen, Roseanne Barr and Mary Tyler Moore in PBS's 4-part special series, American in Primetime, which examines shows and characters that have reflected and changed the American fabric. The series airs Sundays, 8/7c from October 30 to November 20."I feel really proud," Felicity says of her representation of an unconventional mother who overcame pills, cancer and a miscarriage. "Lynette, as did Roseanne, got to speak about the kinds of things that aren't said everyday. It's told the truth."As for rumors that Desperate Housewives is entering its final season, Felicity says she's still holding out hope for a little more. "I hope it's not the last, but maybe it is," she says. "I think everybody hopes we go two more years."Subscribe to TV Guide Magazine now!
