It is one of only a handful of L.A. condo buildings where units routinely sell for more than $1,000 per square foot, an industry benchmark. "You have to be in full makeup at all times when you get in the elevator -- you never know who you are going to run into," says Nikki Haskell, the StarShape diet and fitness guru and a Sierra Towers resident since 1990. She is testing the waters and has put her two-bedroom unit on the market for $3.2 million. Still, Haskell says selling it "would totally break my heart." There are several apocryphal tales about the building's early days that only add to its legend. Residents say that the site for Sierra Towers was originally situated in Beverly Hills, but when that city balked at the proposed height, the property was annexed by Los Angeles County, which then allowed construction to move forward. There are also tales of payoffs by organized crime to neighbors in nearby buildings and houses who grumbled about their views being ruined; another story involves Frank Sinatra helping to get the building completed after construction stalled because he wanted a place for his mother to live. The building is also said to get its plural name from scuttled original plans to build a second tower. (The cities of Beverly Hills and West Hollywood as well as the Los Angeles Conservancy have no records or information that validate these stories.) The building opened in 1966, just as the adjacent Sunset Strip was roaring to life, and became the tallest residential structure in Los Angeles. The architect, Jack A. Charney, who studied under Richard Neutra and Rudolph Schindler, said in a 1965 Los Angeles Times article that he designed the building "to take maximum advantage of views of city, mountains and ocean." To that end, units in the building, which includes one-, two- and three-bedroom residences, feature true floor-to-ceiling windows and expansive terraces. Sierra Towers was first operated as a rental property, but following its purchase by NY real estate investor Helmsley Spear Inc., the building was converted to condominiums in 1974. Back then, a one-bedroom condo could be had for $70,500 and a three-bedroom unit for $152,500, according to a 1974 Los Angeles Times story. The building drew actors, socialites and singers; The Fugitive star David Janssen settled in, as did star jockey Willie Shoemaker and later, Tawny Kitaen. These days, Sierra Towers condos routinely fetch prices typically reserved for houses in Beverly Hills or Brentwood. This fall, for example, Matthew Perry unloaded a two-bedroom unit for slightly less than $3 million; he had bought it from John in 2005 for $3.2 million. According to data from the Multiple Listing Service, 10 units have been sold in 2011, with an average price of $2.1 million ($1,080 per square foot). That's up from 2010, when eight were sold for an average price of $1.6 million ($850 per square foot). Still, prices are down from the boom years, when units sold for more than $2,000 per square foot; and at the height of the recession in 2009, only one unit traded hands. But Filice cautions that recent sales figures don't tell the whole story because some deals are conducted off the market and don't appear in sales databases. He said there have been three such sales this year. EXCLUSIVE: Hollywood's Historic Taft Building for Sale Filice knows the building well. A San Francisco transplant, he bought a unit in January 2002 for $725,000 after being captivated by the views, locale and -- perhaps most of all -- an opportunity. The Sotheby's International Realty agent felt that the building, which at the time had fallen out of favor with the celebrity set, could be repositioned to a new generation of Hollywood players. He says that his grassroots advertising campaign brought a slew of new residents to the tower, transforming it into a hotspot for young Hollywood. During the past decade, Lohan and Rachel Zoe moved in, among others. In the boom years, some flippers -- including Vincent Gallo -- made a fortune, turning units quickly for profits in the millions. Residents say that the building functions as a true community: A-listers are friendly in the hallways, quick to offer a smile or hold the elevator. "Everybody in the building has a tremendous amount of privacy -- it's not every man for himself," Haskell says. But the building's array of outsize personalities has produced memorable moments for some residents. A handful of stories, in fact, revolve around the building's elevators, of which there are just two -- an oversight by the developer that, Kitaen says, made it cumbersome to remodel her many residences (she lived in five units from the early 1980s to 2008). With only two elevators, strange trips can occur. Filice, for example, recalls one ride he took that ended with the doors opening on Lohan, clothed only in an unbuttoned men's dress shirt, in the midst of an argument with then-boyfriend Scott Storch, a record producer. (Filice, who says he has sold more than 100 units at the building, no longer lives there.) One former resident recalls working out in the gym and expecting to see a "catfight between Alex Carrington and Dominique Deveraux" -- the Dynasty characters portrayed by Collins and Carroll, respectively. (It didn't happen.) Through the years, owners have taken advantage of the building's design to re-imagine their units. Because Sierra Towers was built with crawl space between floors, owners are afforded great flexibility in rerouting plumbing and other systems to different places in units. Among those who've put their own stamp on things: Charles S. Cohen, owner of the Pacific Design Center, who has combined three units. Cher's unit is the only two-story condo in the building -- it was previously owned by Gallo and earlier, Geffen. For his part, John has created a residence for his 10-month-old son, Zachary, that is adjacent to the singer's pad. Kitaen, Haskell and others say the building's staff of 37 -- which includes security personnel, porters and 11 valets, distinguishes it from other high-end condo properties, including Wilshire Corridor mainstays such as the Blair House and new additions like The Century. That sentiment is echoed by Sotheby's agent Josh Greer, also a resident. "There are newer, glossier, flashier buildings on the Corridor, but they are dime-a-dozen," says Greer, who has owned several units in the tower over the years and sold seven there in the past six months. "I come home and they hand me my FedEx packages and take my car, which is perfectly washed by the valets. I am never going to leave." Of course, homeowner association dues are dear: A fee of roughly $1.20 per square foot per month means that the owner of a 2,100-square-foot, three-bedroom unit forks over about $2,520 per month. Greer likens Sierra Towers to a top-tier NY co-op, such as the Dakota. But unlike Manhattan, where there are several residential towers favored by that city's elite, in L.A., a confluence of timing, location and Hollywood glamour has allowed Sierra Towers to stand alone. Last week, Movieline spoke with with Fast Five star Tyrese Gibson to get the male perspective on being part of such a lucrative, testosterone-driven franchise. Eager to get another take, we reached out to Jordana Brewster, who has played the sole heroine of the car heist series since day one. The Yale graduate eagerly discussed her growing role in Fast Five (which is released on DVD and Blu-ray this week), a potential sixth installment and her own meager knowledge of automobiles. It seems like even five movies in, Fast & Furious continues to grow more and more popular at the box office. Did you have any idea that it would be such a lasting franchise when you signed on? No! When we signed on, I was in high school and I didn’t know much about car culture. I didn’t even have my license at the time, so I knew that we were making a movie about cars but I don’t think any of us knew that we were onto something so special that would keep growing. Justin [Lin] is really amazing in that he keeps building on it without taking the fans for granted. He knows that he’s got to keep expanding and he does that by taking us to new places like Rio de Janeiro and adding characters like Dwayne Johnson’s character. Our fans are amazing and so loyal. And not just the fans but the critics also seem to have a certain respect for this franchise. Have you always felt the critics’ support as well? I stopped reading reviews like two or three movies in, so I try not to pay too much attention to that. But if they did, that’s awesome. Has your knowledge of cars expanded tremendously since the first movie? Well, I still don’t drive a stick. I did take one class, but I was so hopeless, I just said, “I’m not going to get this” and gave that up. I do love driving and appreciate it more. There’s no way you can’t living in Los Angeles. I also have developed an appreciation for just beautiful cars like the GT40 I drove in Fast Five. I was like, “Oh my gosh, I love the lines on that car.” But then someone like Paul will know what’s going into the engine and how you fix that car if it breaks down. I’m not that savvy. Do you feel any pressure to drive an awesome car in real life? No, I mean, I drive a Range Rover Sport which I really love. My dream car would be a Maserati. That would be amazing. Fast Five was such a fun movie to watch. What was the most fun scene to shoot? My favorite scene by far was the foot chase that we shot in Puerto Rico. Paul and I got to do all of these stunts which was so much fun for me — not just as an actor because I got to kick ass and jump off roofs — but because my character, Mia, got to grow and be on the run with the boys. That was something that Justin and I had talked about, and it was really important to evolve. Did you have to do some strong convincing to let Justin do your own stunts? No, Justin was like, “I’m going to push you on this one.” It was just time for her — and me — to be on the run with the boys and protect her family. She had a lot more at stake on this movie. How do you unwind from being on such an action-heavy, testosterone-fueled set every day? I meditate, which I really like. Just 20 minutes twice a day and that really helps. It’s funny because when you watch the movie it seems like it’s constant adrenaline but there’s so much stopping and starting on set that everyone is pretty mellow. That’s the only way to keep your sanity. [SPOILER ALERT] How did you react when you found out that Mia was going to be pregnant in this movie? I was excited, because story-wise, I thought it helped up the ante for her and it helped her and [Paul Walker’s character] Brian become closer. How do you think this will change the trajectory of the franchise? I don’t know. I’m excited to see where they’ll take it if there’s a sixth movie. Have you heard anything about a sixth movie yet? Nothing official, but I would be up for it. It’s so much fun because you’re working with your friends and you’re working with these people that you have a shorthand with. How much feedback do you get from female fans? I think I’ve gotten the most feedback on this one because Mia was stronger and on the run with the boys and involved in the action. Because she was a stronger female character, I did get a great response. I hear from them on Twitter about the action sequences. And yes, I still get a lot of questions about Paul and what it’s like to work with him. [Laughs]

According to The Hollywood Reporters sources, the returning stars of the upcoming American Reunion pulled in a wide array of salaries to film the fourth installment in the series. Sources told the trade magazine that Jason Biggs, who plays Jim, and Seann William Scott, who plays prankster Steve Stifler, were brought back with a $5 million pay day each. They were also reportedly given a piece of the box office action. Next in the salary scale is How I Met Your Mother actress Alyson Hannigan, who is taking home $3 million, a salary close to that obtained by Eugene Levy, who plays Jims dad, per THR. On the opposite end of the scale, according to THRs sources was Tara Reid. The mag claimed the actress arguably one of the biggest names in the cast when the original American Pie came out in 1999 took home around $250,000. Meanwhile Chris Klein (Oz), Natasha Lyonne (Jessica), Eddie Kaye Thomas (Finch), Jennifer Coolidge (Stiflers mom) and Shannon Elisabeth (Nadia) reportedly earned between $500,000 - $750,000 each. Fleck, Boden to open 'Hate Mail'

BodenFleck Writing-directing team Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, who became darlings of the indie scene following "Half Nelson" and "Sugar," have set their next picture, a drama titled "Hate Mail." Project will be fully financed by Wayfare Entertainment, which previously produced Fleck and Boden's adaptation of Ned Vizzini's novel "It's Kind of a Funny Story." "Hate Mail" will feature inter-weaving stories about several Manhattanites who encounter various iterations of hate mail and grapple with the subsequent fallout of their relationships. Project reunites the filmmakers with a quartet of past collaborators, as Jamie Patricof will produce through his Hunting Lane Films banner, while Paul Mezey will produce via his Journeyman Pictures shingle. Wayfare's Ben Browning and Jeremy Kipp Walker will also produce. Mezey previously produced "Sugar" and exec produced "Half Nelson," while Patricof produced both of those films, though neither was involved with "It's Kind of a Funny Story," which was produced by Browning. Walker had credits on all three pics, having co-produced "Half Nelson," produced "Sugar" and exec produced "Funny Story." "Hate Mail" will soon begin casting, as production is skedded to start in spring 2012. Fleck and Boden burst onto Hollywood's radar with their award-winning short film "Gowanus, Brooklyn," which bowed at Sundance in 2004 before the duo expanded the story to feature-length with "Half Nelson." Johnny Jewel Talks Scoring Logan's Run and the Alternate Indie-Electro Soundtrack for Drive

Electro musician (and Italians Do It Better label owner) Johnny Jewel elaborated on the Drive score he was commissioned to compose by director Nicolas Winding Refn. “Nic flew to Montreal and we rented a movie theater and he and I watched the movie twice in a row, back-to-back. We talked about every single scene and all the music. So then from there, I had a month to finish the score.” Although Refn opted to use Cliff Martinez’s score for the final film, fans will get another Refn-Jewel collaboration when Jewel scores another upcoming Refn film: Logan’s Run. “Nic talked to me a little bit about Logan’s Run,” Jewel told Movies.com. “He mentioned it and was just trying to feel out if I was interested, and I was telling him about how on my 30th birthday, I had a party and I had a blinking stone in my hand, because I was super into that movie and obsessed with the idea of turning 30 or whatever. So that’s something I’ve been doing. So in 2013, they’re doing a script for it. They’re working on a screenplay next year, after they do Only God Forgives.” Meanwhile, over at Box Office Magazine, Jewel discussed the unused Drive score that he plans on releasing as part of his Symmetry Project. I had a great time working on it. And for a movie that’s not even an hour and a half, I have 14 minutes of music, which is awesome. But I recorded three hours of music.What is happening with that music that you recorded?I collaborated with Matt Walker who plays drums for the Chromatics and Desire, and we’re going to end up releasing some of that stuff on Italians Do It Better [Jewel’s record label] under like an imaginary film project called Symmetry. It was already in motion and we were working on kind of wallpaper, not like forgettable music, but sort of abstract mood music. You can only put so much abstraction on a pop record before it like tips the scales and feels imbalanced or possibly indulgent for what a fan of a rock or pop record wants, so for the last three years I’ve basically been piling up stuff that’s gone into the Symmetry pile, and we’re going to release different volumes of it, and my score for Drive is about half of the first one. So it’s really cool, and the music will be heard—I’m sure because it’s film-based, the score will probably end up in a ton of other movies. Because it’s perfect for film: it’s abstract enough, and it’s not locked into a pop structure, which is really good visually because I know editors have trouble with really strictly structured music. Movieline previously dug up Drive-inspired sketches that Jewel and his Chromatics collaborator Adam Miller had drawn to go with the film tracks; Jewel explained that the sketches came from his highly-involved preparatory process, which began with studying the James Sallis novel on which the film is based: I have a lot of weird rituals. One of the first things I did was I took the book and I highlighted all of the phrases, things like “last day,” “sanctuary,” all of these different phrases from the movie that stimulated my brain, and I’d print those words really big and put them on the wall. Or while I’m writing—this was sort of like a mantra — we were drawing pictures while watching the movie every day. Because everything I do is like going into this camp mode where we would cut ourselves off. I was watching the movie while taking a bath, I was watching the movie while eating, like every day. Because there was only so much time and I wanted to know the movie inside and out, and I can’t be watching the movie while I’m actually writing. While I was actually trying to figure out melodies and things like that, I had to watch the movie as much as possible. We drew almost like every scene — there’s like 150 of them — so we drew so much, and then I forgot about them and then stumbled across them a couple of weeks ago. [Movies.com, Box Office Magazine]

Brits back local film biz

LONDON -- The high value that the U.K. public places on the cultural importance of film is revealed in market research published Friday by the British Film Institute. According to the report, titled "Opening Our Eyes: how film contributes to the culture of the U.K.," 84% of Brits say they are interested in film. That's behind TV and U.K. news, with 88% apiece, but ahead of foreign news (81%), restaurants (80%), the countryside (80%), pop and rock music (69%), literature (67%), politics (62%), museums (59%), pubs and clubs (53%), watching and playing sport (52% and 51% respectively), theater (50%), art (46%), celebrities (32%) and religion (32%). There is even more support for specifically British films, with 88% of people saying they think local movies are important, and 78% in favor of public funding for U.K. filmmaking through the National Lottery. BFI chief exec Amanda Nevill commented, "This report proves that film is at the heart of our cultural life. Understanding, appreciating and assessing its cultural contribution is essential to forward-looking public policy and will guide our funding priorities for film." The BFI took over from the U.K. Film Council in April as the body responsible for investing lottery coin in film production. Until recently, it was widely assumed within the U.K. film industry that local cinema audiences regarded the label "British film" as a negative. However, according to the BFI research, half of respondents said they were more likely to watch a film if it is British; 86% said they had seen a British film in the past year; and more than half said there are too few British films in cinemas and on TV. A remarkable 95% said that British films are "well made," and 94% said they are "well acted." This public approval is borne out by U.K. box office results in 2011, with British films occupying the top three positions -- "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2," "The King's Speech" and "The Inbetweeners Movie." Perhaps surprisingly, the film identified by the largest numbers of respondents as having a significant effort on U.K. society was "Trainspotting," followed by "The Full Monty," "East Is East," "Billy Elliot," "The King's Speech," "This Is England," "Cathy Come Home," "Brassed Off," "Slumdog Millionaire" and "Kidulthood." Out of all films, British and non-British, "The King's Speech" was most frequently mentioned as having a personal effect on people, followed by "Schindler's List," "Avatar," "Slumdog Millionaire," "Titanic" and "The Shawshank Redemption." Eva Longoria Lines Up Many, Many Post-Desperate Housewives Roles

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- When Desperate Housewives ends its run at the end of the 2011-2012 television season, fans who want their Eva Longoria fix might have to head to the theater but theyll have plenty to choose from! The actress has already lined up a host of projects sending her from primetime princess to box office baby! First up, according to Variety, Eva will play the other woman in Long Time Gone, with Meg Ryan and recent Hellcats actress Aly Michalka. Dog lover Eva will then move to play a woman who fights with an ex in Who Gets The Dog? Shell also join Four Kings, playing the noble wife, Gwenievieve Nicholson, alongside Brendan Frasers Col. Lord Francis Nicholson, a Brit working to create a utopian society, as he helps fund the French and Indian War, the trade paper reported. Finally, shell head to the computer screen, voicing Marley Wiener in the Hulu animated series, Child Support. As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, earlier this month, ABC confirmed Desperate Housewives would wrap up at the end of its upcoming season. Hurricane Irene Shuts Broadway Productions: Disney Shows Among Cancellations (Developing)

The decision was made for the "patrons' and staff's safety following the announcement of the impending suspension of MTA and Metro North service." Tickets for all three performances for the shows will be refunded. Also joining the list of weekend casualties is Lincoln Center Theater's War Horse, which won the 2011 Tony Award for best play. The Nederlander Organization also tweeted that all Broadway shows in its theaters would be canceled for Saturday and Sunday. That list includes Wicked, The Addams Family, Follies, Catch Me If You Can and Priscilla Queen of the Desert. It now seems safe to assume that most or all of the other shows playing on Broadway will cancel weekend performances due to safety concerns. The Broadway League, the official representative organization for Broadway, has released no update and its site continues to show that all performances are continuing as scheduled. But Playbill.com and other outlets are reporting that all Broadway theaters will go dark for the weekend, making this the biggest emergency shut-down since the 9/11 attacks in 2001. The Off-Broadway productions of Summer Shorts 5, Captain Ferguson's School for Balloon Warfare and Olive and the Bitter Herbs at the 59E59 Theaters have also been canceled for the weekend due to Irene. The special, one-night staged reading of Side Man by Warren Leight with Zachary Quinto and Melissa Leo, originally set to take place Sunday at 1 p.m., has also been nixed "in response to predicted hurricane conditions," the update on the Guild Hall website said. Entertainment companies said they will keep New York employees up-to-date on potential hurricane effects on offices over the weekend and on Monday. Tyler would play a woman who braves the Brazilian jungle to save a girl's life, but once there discovers it was a trap to get her inside "The Hell Within". Short filmmaker Dennison Ramalho will be directing the project, which was written by Jeff Buhler of "The Midnight Meat Train" fame. [Bloody-Disgusting] 'The Faces' is Looking at 'Grace' Director Paul Solet From the producers who brought you "The Strangers" comes FilmNation Entertainment's "The Faces", and "Grace" director Paul Solet will be taking on the horror-thriller based on Eric Reese's screenplay. The film has a "Hostel-esque" spin, centering on two newlyweds who survive a brutal kidnapping. One year later, they find themselves facing a horrifying series of events, yet again.
